In our digital age, through social media, 24-hour news cycles, and portable technology, we are increasingly connected with the world at large. For all intents and purposes, the world is literally at our fingertips. However, none of these virtual escapes supersede the actual experience of immersing oneself into another culture. The allure of travel remains fresh and exciting. In our constantly changing world, how do we capture our experiences abroad?
WAH Goes Abroad hopes to explore how we navigate the experience of going abroad and what we take away from our experiences traveling. Questions of identity and nationality are inherent as one immerses oneself in a different culture. How do we interact with other nationalities, do we experience them as voyeurs or do we “dive in”? How do we react to returning to our ancestral countries, are we experiencing them as an immigrant or seeing them for the first time? What do we seek to capture on our return, the commonalities or the differences?
The WAH Center presents WAH Goes Abroad – a multi-media group exhibition dedicated to exploring the myriad of ways in which artists capture and commemorate their travels. The WAH Center is a not-for-profit art and historical center in Williamsburg, Brooklyn that seeks to emulate WAH Center Founder & Artistic Director Yuko Nii’s Bridge concept in which artists are varying nationalities, identities, and styles are connected. Artists are encouraged to submit artworks in the medium of their choosing, including two-dimensional works (painting, drawing. watercolor, printmaking, photography, etc), three-dimensional works (sculpture including craft such as glass, ceramic, weaving, furniture, etc), video/film, and installation.
