The Mermaid Show has become a beloved tradition in the Williamsburg art community. Unfettered imagination rules this festival of eccentric seafaring motifs replete with seductive sirens, creative mischief, and all the feverish derring-do of Neptune's domain. A melange of seashore frolic and artistic obsession, The Mermaid Show is the East River's compliment to the Mardi Gras tradition of the Coney Island midsummer madcap Mermaid Parade, "America's Largest Art Parade," now in it's 22nd year. (Visit www.coneyisland.com) In the spirit of the parade, Ms. Skoczek's exhibit celebrates art at the wacky edge, from the conventional myths and mystique of mermaid and mermen, to cutting themes on social decadence and political irony — the imagery of sensuous enticements of nautical fetish, to the allure and gaiety of fishnet fantasies.
